Ignoring Critics, Mandelson Insists Close UK Ties to Trump’s America Are Essential

by admin477351

UK Ambassador Peter Mandelson has forcefully pushed back against what he termed the “lazy thinking” of those advocating for distancing the UK from Donald Trump’s America. In a defiant speech, he insisted that a close partnership with the US is essential, arguing that differences on climate change, aid, and trade do not preclude a deep strategic alliance.

Mandelson’s central argument is that the shared challenge posed by China’s technological ambitions outweighs other areas of disagreement. He called for a comprehensive US-UK tech partnership covering AI and quantum computing, which he described as being as potentially important as the security relationship forged in WWII. This, he argued, must be the top priority.

The ambassador presented a largely positive view of President Trump, describing him as a leader who understands the anxieties of voters and is not afraid to take risks to disrupt a failing system. He denied any need to be “sycophantic” but praised Trump for his energy and for challenging allies to take on more responsibility instead of letting the US do all the “heavy lifting.”

The speech conspicuously avoided contentious issues like Trump’s views on Putin, his domestic policies, or the conflict in Gaza. For Mandelson, the strategic imperative of aligning with the US to win the tech race against China is a goal so vital that it justifies overlooking significant points of friction and potential value clashes.
