TOKYO – Hotel Okura just made one of its most significant announcements in years: the brand will launch Okura Resort Hakone Gora, its first domestic resort, in 2029. The move positions the company to capture a major share of Hakone’s booming tourism market, which attracts nearly 20 million visitors every year.
The ambitious project is a collaboration with Nishimatsu Construction, with the two companies locking in an operational management agreement in July 2025. Hotel Okura will run the resort, while Nishimatsu oversees development and ownership.
President Toshihiro Ogita highlighted the reasons behind choosing Hakone: a rare blend of natural beauty, deep cultural significance, and global appeal. “This is a destination where tradition, landscape, and hospitality come together,” he said.
A key design highlight is the “Forest Hideaway” concept by acclaimed designer Gwenael Nicolas, known for integrating architecture with nature. All 58 rooms will include private outdoor hot spring baths with water sourced directly from Owakudani. Guests can also expect premium indoor bathing, saunas, a teppanyaki counter, and a stylish bar lounge.
The upcoming resort sets the stage for a major evolution in the Okura brand—combining heritage, luxury, and the unmistakable character of Hakone.
