Alphonse Areola produced several outstanding saves to prevent Liverpool from running riot at the London Stadium, though his heroics ultimately counted for little in West Ham’s 2-0 defeat. The French goalkeeper kept his team competitive throughout, denying Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz with spectacular stops that deserved better defensive support in front of him.
Areola’s finest moment came after 21 minutes when Isak produced a spectacular falling volley that seemed destined for the net. The West Ham goalkeeper responded with an equally spectacular starfish save, throwing his body across goal to beat the ball away. It was a world-class stop that highlighted Areola’s quality and West Ham’s reliance on their goalkeeper to compensate for defensive inadequacies.
Six minutes before halftime, Areola was called into action again. When Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s attempted interception fell for Wirtz, the German international struck a well-placed shot toward the bottom corner. Areola got down quickly, stretching to make a fine save that kept the scores level at the break. Without these interventions, Liverpool’s margin of victory could have been significantly wider.
Even when Areola was finally beaten on the hour mark, it came from a well-worked move that gave him little chance. Isak’s first-time finish from Cody Gakpo’s cutback was clinically taken, and no goalkeeper could have prevented it. The second goal, Gakpo’s late strike following Lucas Paquetá’s dismissal, merely confirmed what Areola’s earlier saves had temporarily delayed.
For West Ham, Areola’s performance represented one of few positives from another disappointing home display. The goalkeeper has consistently performed above the level of his teammates this season, making saves that keep scorelines respectable even when the team around him struggles. However, individual excellence can only compensate for collective mediocrity for so long, and West Ham require significant improvement across the team if they are to climb away from danger.
