Beijing Claims “Deliberate Ramming” by Philippine Ship in Disputed Waters

Beijing has accused the Philippines of a “deliberate ramming” after a collision between ships from the two countries in the disputed South China Sea on Tuesday. The incident, which took place near the Scarborough Shoal, saw Chinese Coast Guard vessels also use water cannons to drive away a flotilla of more than ten Philippine government ships, marking a serious escalation of their long-standing feud.

In its official statement, the Chinese Coast Guard painted the Philippines as the aggressor, alleging its ship purposefully struck a Chinese vessel in a dangerous and hostile act. Beijing stated it holds Manila fully accountable for the confrontation and its consequences. The Philippines has not yet provided its account of the collision.

The clash follows China’s controversial announcement last week to establish a “national nature reserve” in the contested area. This move was widely interpreted as a tactic to solidify Beijing’s claim to the shoal, known in the Philippines as Bajo de Masinloc. The Philippine government had already voiced its intent to protest the declaration as a violation of its sovereign rights.

The Scarborough Shoal is a highly sensitive flashpoint within the broader territorial conflicts of the South China Sea. China’s sweeping claims, which encompass most of the vital waterway, are a major source of friction with its neighbors. The disputes are a threat to regional stability and freedom of navigation, a principle of critical importance to global trade.

The international community has begun to respond, with several countries expressing support for Manila. A prominent US lawmaker condemned China’s recent actions as coercive. The UK and Australia also communicated their concerns through social media, while Canada’s embassy in the Philippines issued a statement opposing the use of environmental claims as a pretext for taking control of the disputed shoal.
