Taiwan is bracing for a significant rise in temperatures today, with some areas predicted to reach up to 37°C. This heat precedes the anticipated effects from Typhoon Mekkhala, which is expected to introduce showers and thunderstorms later in the week. The Central Weather Administration has indicated that most regions across the island will experience a mix of cloudy and sunny skies, with daytime temperatures ranging from 31°C to 36°C. Particular attention is on areas north of Taoyuan, the central and southern inland regions, and the Hualien-Taitung Rift Valley, where temperatures could surpass 37°C.

Typhoon Mekkhala is set to approach Taiwan most closely on Wednesday. Although it is not projected to make direct landfall, the typhoon’s outer bands are likely to bring sporadic showers and thunderstorms to the northeastern and western parts of Taiwan. Additionally, mountainous areas in the south are on alert for potential localized heavy rainfall. As of Tuesday afternoon, Mekkhala was positioned approximately 500 kilometers southeast of Oluanpi, making its way toward the Ryukyu Islands and southern Japan. Weather experts anticipate the storm will weaken over time due to less conducive atmospheric and oceanic conditions.

Following the typhoon’s passage, a weather front situated north of Taiwan is expected to maintain unstable weather conditions through Friday and Saturday. This system is likely to result in periodic rain and thunderstorms, particularly affecting central and northern Taiwan, while other parts of the island may experience scattered showers. The combination of increased cloud cover and precipitation is predicted to bring down temperatures to around 30°C from Wednesday through Saturday.

In the meantime, Tropical Storm Higos remains far to the east-southeast of Taiwan. Current forecasts suggest that it will move in the direction of Japan, without posing any threat to Taiwan.
