Taiwan is poised to initiate a significant economic distribution plan, proposing a one-time cash payment of NT$10,000 (approximately US$315) to eligible residents starting January 26, 2027. This plan, pending approval of the 2027 central government budget, aims to share the economic gains from the burgeoning artificial intelligence sector, according to the Taiwanese government. The initiative is underpinned by an allocation of NT$235.7 billion in the proposed budget, with assurances from officials that it will adhere to fiscal discipline without necessitating additional borrowing.
The proposed distribution will be available to a wide range of recipients, including Taiwanese citizens with household registration, foreign nationals holding permanent residency, and certain residents with valid residence permits. Additionally, eligible spouses of Taiwanese citizens from China, Hong Kong, Macau, and other countries, as well as Taiwanese government employees serving overseas and their eligible dependents, will be included in the scheme.
The government plans to facilitate the distribution through five payment options: bank-account registration, ATM withdrawals, post office withdrawals, direct deposits, and roster-based payments. A network of 17 financial institutions is expected to support ATM withdrawals, enhancing accessibility for recipients.
The timeline for implementation hinges on legislative approval of the budget by January 5, followed by presidential promulgation by January 20. Should these conditions be met, pre-registration may begin on January 20, with bank deposit registration commencing on January 25. The initial payments are slated to start on January 26, utilizing pre-registration, direct deposits, and roster-based distribution methods.
ATM withdrawals are anticipated to be available from February 15, 2027, with post office withdrawals starting a week later on February 22. The general deadline for claiming the payment extends to August 31, 2027, while eligible newborns born by the end of 2027 will have until January 31, 2028, to receive the payment.
