Typhoon Champi Brings Heavy Rain and Cooling Temperatures to Northern Taiwan

by admin477351

As Typhoon Champi approaches Taiwan, residents in northern and northeastern regions, including the greater Taipei area and Yilan County, are bracing for heavy rainfall and cooler temperatures later this week. The storm is expected to have its strongest impact on the island on Friday and Saturday before it veers towards Japan on Sunday.

The outer circulation of the typhoon, combined with seasonal northeasterly winds, is likely to bring persistent showers and localized heavy rainfall, particularly in mountainous areas such as Hualien County and parts of central Taiwan. With the increase in rainfall, temperatures in these affected regions could drop, with daytime highs predicted to fall to around 23°C to 24°C starting Thursday. However, Taitung County may experience significantly warmer temperatures, reaching above 36°C on Friday, due to warm, dry foehn winds descending from the mountains.

Current reports place Typhoon Champi approximately 1,050 kilometers east-southeast of Taiwan’s southernmost point, moving west-northwest at a speed of about 23 kilometers per hour. Its projected path has shifted slightly westward, though there remains some uncertainty as forecasts continue to be updated. Authorities have indicated that a sea warning may be issued late Wednesday or early Thursday, with a possible land warning to follow on Thursday afternoon or evening, contingent upon the storm’s trajectory and intensity.

The typhoon is expected to begin moving away from Taiwan on Sunday, with rainfall gradually easing and becoming concentrated mainly in northeastern areas. Residents, especially those in northern and eastern Taiwan and mountainous regions, are advised to stay informed through official weather updates and prepare for potential heavy rain and related disruptions.
