Taiwan has expressed approval for a recent recommendation by the European Parliament that rejects China’s attempts to limit its participation in international organizations and exchanges. This recommendation emphasizes the shared democratic values and the existing economic, trade, and technological ties between Taiwan and the European Union (EU), while supporting peace across the Taiwan Strait and opposing unilateral changes to the status quo through force or coercion.
The European Parliament’s recommendation also criticizes what it describes as China’s pressure tactics aimed at curtailing Taiwan’s international engagement. It raises concerns over the extraterritorial application of Chinese laws. Furthermore, the European Parliament acknowledges Taiwan’s significant role in the global semiconductor industry and high-tech supply chains, calling for enhanced EU-Taiwan cooperation in areas such as semiconductors, cybersecurity, and economic security.
In a move to further strengthen ties, the recommendation encourages the EU to initiate preparations for negotiations on a bilateral investment agreement or another framework that would enhance cooperation on critical supply chains. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed gratitude for the European Parliament’s continuous focus on Taiwan’s international participation and regional stability. The ministry stated that Taiwan is committed to working with the EU and other like-minded partners to bolster technological cooperation, safeguard critical supply chains, and counter foreign information manipulation.
This development underscores the growing importance of Taiwan-EU relations amid broader geopolitical tensions and concerns over the security of global technology and trade networks. The interaction between Taiwan and the EU reflects an effort to reinforce alliances and maintain stability in a rapidly changing global landscape.
