Taiwan has reasserted its sovereignty in response to criticism from China regarding President Lai Ching-te’s National Day speech. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that the island’s future should be decided by its 23 million residents, rejecting any interference from Beijing in its political affairs.
China accused President Lai of escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait and threatening regional peace with his address. In light of this, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry stressed that Taiwan and China do not hold a subordinate relationship, urging China to respect Taiwan’s political system and democratic differences.
The ministry called on Beijing to cease actions that could further heighten tensions or attempts to alter the status quo through force. Despite the criticisms, Taiwan reiterated its dedication to preserving peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
Furthermore, Taiwan pledged to enhance collaboration with democratic partners worldwide to safeguard its sovereignty and promote its long-term development. This stance reflects Taiwan’s ongoing commitment to maintaining its autonomy amid external pressures.
