At the Asia-Pacific Forum & Exposition for Sustainability held in Taipei, President William Lai emphasized Taiwan’s commitment to advancing sustainable development within the Asia-Pacific region. By capitalizing on its expertise in science, technology, manufacturing, and innovation, Taiwan aims to play a pivotal role in this initiative. The forum convened businesses and organizations from across Asia, concentrating on crucial areas such as clean energy, circular design, green finance, and low-carbon living.
Lai underscored the significance of resilience, innovation, and shared prosperity in Taiwan’s strategy for sustainable development. The government is actively engaged in enhancing urban resilience, boosting energy security, expanding renewable energy sources, and improving power grid infrastructure and energy storage capabilities. A comprehensive carbon reduction strategy is also underway, supported by both technological and financial measures. As part of this plan, Taiwan has initiated the collection of carbon fee payments to aid in reducing emissions.
In a bid to support businesses in transitioning towards digitalization and achieving net-zero operations, Taiwan’s government is planning to establish a fund amounting to NT$100 billion over the next eight years. This initiative is complemented by additional support aimed at micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises through a diversified development program. The goal is to facilitate these businesses in adapting to environmentally sustainable practices.
Leveraging its strengths in semiconductors, information technology, and precision manufacturing, Taiwan is determined to foster sustainable growth. The country’s efforts are geared not only towards local development but also towards contributing to global sustainability efforts. Through these initiatives, Taiwan seeks to reinforce its position as a leader in promoting sustainable development across the Asia-Pacific region.
