Taiwan has decided to halt its spot market purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Papua New Guinea. This decision comes as a reaction to Papua New Guinea’s recent closure of Taiwan’s representative office in its capital, Port Moresby. The suspension affects around 500,000 tonnes of LNG that Taiwan would have otherwise procured. Despite this halt in spot purchases, a long-term agreement remains unchanged, under which Taiwan will continue to receive 1.2 million tonnes of LNG annually from Papua New Guinea.
The Taiwanese government emphasized that future decisions regarding the resumption of spot purchases or the implementation of additional measures will depend significantly on how Papua New Guinea responds to the ongoing situation. This indicates that Taiwan is keeping its options open, monitoring developments closely before deciding on any further actions in the energy trading sphere.
While energy relations are under review, Taiwan has clarified that it will continue its humanitarian and development efforts in Papua New Guinea. These initiatives span various sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, and education, demonstrating Taiwan’s commitment to maintaining its supportive presence in the Pacific nation despite the diplomatic tensions.
The diplomatic landscape between the two nations has been affected by recent developments, prompting Taiwan to reassess its bilateral relations with Papua New Guinea. However, Taiwan’s assurance of ongoing development programs highlights its intention to separate humanitarian aid from political disagreements, at least for the time being.
