In a recent appeal to the legislature, Taiwan Premier Cho Jung-tai emphasized the urgency of reviewing and approving nominees for the Control Yuan and the National Communications Commission (NCC). This call to action comes in the wake of the expiration of terms for previous officials, which has left both entities unable to perform their duties effectively.
Highlighting the constitutional role of the Control Yuan as an oversight body, Premier Cho urged lawmakers to prioritize the qualifications of nominees over political affiliations. He stressed the importance of a thorough evaluation process to ensure that appointments are based on merit. Furthermore, he called for a prompt review of the Cabinet’s selections for the NCC to maintain seamless government operations.
The inactivity of the NCC has resulted in a standstill of critical functions such as telecommunications regulation and the renewal of broadcasting licenses. This pause in operations poses significant challenges to the country’s communication infrastructure and regulatory oversight.
Additionally, the inability of the Control Yuan to operate effectively has raised concerns among critics. They warn that the absence of an active oversight body could impede investigations into alleged misconduct involving senior public officials, potentially delaying accountability processes and undermining public trust.
