Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has embarked on a significant five-day state visit to Taiwan, aimed at deepening the diplomatic ties and exploring areas for expanded cooperation between the two nations. This visit underscores the ongoing relationship between Saint Lucia and Taiwan, which was first established in 1984, briefly severed in 1997, and then restored in 2007.
During his visit, Prime Minister Pierre is scheduled to meet with Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te and other senior officials to discuss a range of bilateral issues and potential future collaborations. President Lai will formally welcome Pierre with a military honours ceremony, and Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung will host a banquet in his honor.
The delegation accompanying Prime Minister Pierre includes notable figures such as Saint Lucia Attorney General Leslie Mondesir, Senator Allison A Jean, and Saint Lucia Development Bank Chairman Daryl Raymond. Their itinerary in Taiwan involves visits to prominent locations including Cathay General Hospital, the iconic Taipei 101, and the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Museum of Innovation in Hsinchu.
This state visit marks Pierre’s fourth trip to Taiwan since taking office in 2021, highlighting a sustained commitment to fostering strong diplomatic and cooperative relations. The visit provides both nations an opportunity to further explore shared interests and enhance diplomatic engagement.
Saint Lucia remains one of the few countries that officially maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan, eschewing the diplomatic recognition of the People’s Republic of China. This ongoing partnership is pivotal for both nations as they aim to solidify and broaden areas of mutual interest and cooperation.
