As global challenges of natural and man-made disasters continue to rise, international collaboration in disaster management has become increasingly crucial. In response, Taiwan has taken a significant step by hosting international disaster management officials and experts in Taipei for the launch of the World Alliance for Disaster Management (WADM), an initiative aimed at enhancing global disaster preparedness and response strategies.
The newly established WADM aims to create a network that brings together governments, emergency response agencies, businesses, academic institutions, and civil society organizations. This network is designed to enhance cooperation across key areas such as disaster prevention, early warning systems, emergency response, and post-disaster recovery efforts.
During the event, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung emphasized the necessity of international cooperation, citing that disasters do not recognize national borders. Lin stressed that building resilience and improving preparedness require a collaborative effort among nations.
Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang also spoke at the gathering, reflecting on Taiwan’s own experience with international aid following the devastating Jiji earthquake in 1999. Liu highlighted Taiwan’s readiness to share its disaster response expertise through initiatives like professional training and joint exercises, which will be a part of the alliance’s focus on information sharing and capacity building.
The formation of the World Alliance for Disaster Management underscores a growing recognition of the need for collective action in the face of global disasters. Through this alliance, member entities aim to foster practical cooperation and enhance disaster management capabilities worldwide.
