Belize PM Reaffirms Support for Taiwan Amid Chinese Sanctions on Foreign Minister

by admin477351

Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño has denounced China’s sanctions against Belizean Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca, characterizing the actions as unjustified and illegal. Speaking at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bangkok, Briceño asserted that these measures would only reinforce Belize’s resolve to support Taiwan.

The sanctions were imposed by China following Fonseca’s participation in an event in Taipei celebrating Taiwan’s Double Ten National Day, alongside Paraguayan Minister of Information and Communication Technologies Gustavo Villate. China’s punitive measures include freezing any assets the officials might hold within China, banning Chinese entities from engaging in business with them, and denying the officials entry into mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

China views Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes any official international engagement with the island. However, Belize maintains formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, placing it among the few countries that continue to defy Beijing’s pressure. Briceño emphasized that Belize is an independent nation with the right to establish its own foreign policy, and the sanctions would not deter its commitment to Taiwan.

The diplomatic strain underscores ongoing tensions surrounding Taiwan’s international status and the challenges faced by countries that choose to maintain ties with Taipei. Prime Minister Briceño reiterated that Belize would stand by Taiwan, highlighting the importance of supporting the island despite external pressures.
