The United States has expressed its disapproval of China’s recent coast guard activities near Taiwan, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasizing that such maneuvers threaten the stability of the Indo-Pacific region. Following a dialogue with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during the ASEAN summit in Manila, Rubio underscored Washington’s continued concerns about China’s actions surrounding Taiwan. He reaffirmed the US commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation and strongly opposed any efforts to limit access to international maritime routes.
Last month, China announced what it termed as “special maritime law enforcement operations” in the vicinity of Taiwan, which it claimed were a reaction to impending maritime boundary discussions involving Japan and the Philippines. The island nation of Taiwan has noted an uptick in the presence of Chinese coast guard vessels in its surrounding waters, including incidents where radio warnings were issued to commercial vessels.
During his meeting with Wang Yi, Rubio stated that the discussions also included preparations for an upcoming visit by US President Donald Trump to Beijing, scheduled for September. Both nations characterized the meeting as productive, expressing a mutual interest in continuing diplomatic dialogues to uphold strategic stability in the region.
The US maintains a consistent stance on its concerns regarding Beijing’s maritime activities, especially around Taiwan, as it seeks to protect international norms and maritime freedoms. The dialogue between Rubio and Wang Yi reflects ongoing efforts to manage tensions and explore avenues for cooperation between the two major powers amid a complex geopolitical landscape.
