The third Taiwan-Europe Chip Innovation Forum recently took place in Antwerp, Belgium, spotlighting Taiwan’s prowess in the semiconductor industry and its broader technological capabilities. The event, which spanned two days, saw participation from four prominent Taiwanese research institutions, each bringing forth their expertise in areas such as semiconductor research, high-performance computing, and earthquake-resistant technologies crucial for chip production.
This forum was a collaborative effort between Taiwan’s semiconductor research institute and the Belgium-based research organization imec. The discussions centered around advanced technologies, research initiatives, talent cultivation, and the potential for strengthened collaboration between Taiwan and Europe. Taiwan is keen on broadening its engagement with Europe beyond the conventional manufacturing and design partnerships, aiming for a more comprehensive cooperation across the entire technology ecosystem.
Taiwanese officials emphasized the complementary nature of the partnership, noting that while Europe excels in basic science and research, Taiwan offers exceptional rapid manufacturing and commercialization skills. By leveraging these strengths, the two regions could foster cross-border research and development projects that connect universities and industries, paving the way for innovative advancements.
Additionally, the forum highlighted the importance of talent development. Taiwan’s scholarship initiatives have already facilitated the education of over 500 European students in semiconductor manufacturing within Taiwan. By expanding these educational programs, Taiwan aims to reinforce long-term academic and industrial connections with Europe, nurturing a new generation of skilled professionals.
