China has expressed approval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments regarding India’s independent foreign policy, following his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS Summit held in New Delhi. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that Beijing appreciates Modi’s assertion that India’s bilateral relations with China should remain uninfluenced by other countries. The spokesperson highlighted the key takeaway from the dialogue, which was the mutual understanding that China and India should act as partners, aiding each other’s developmental goals.

During their discussions, President Xi acknowledged the differing national circumstances of China and India but stressed the importance of fostering cooperation. He stated that both nations should manage their differences through mutual respect and understanding, rather than letting these differences hinder their relationship. The emphasis was on working together towards shared objectives while acknowledging and managing areas of discord.

India reiterated the significance of maintaining peace and stability along their shared border, citing it as crucial for enhancing the bilateral relationship. Prime Minister Modi underscored the necessity of adhering to existing agreements and understandings concerning border issues. This points to a commitment to follow through on established protocols to ensure that the situation along the border remains stable and manageable.

Both leaders agreed on the need to pursue a boundary dispute resolution that is fair and mutually acceptable. They stressed that any differences should not escalate into conflicts, indicating a shared dedication to diplomacy and dialogue as means to resolve outstanding issues. This understanding marks a positive step in their diplomatic relations, emphasizing collaboration over confrontation.

The meeting took place against a backdrop of prolonged tensions along the Line of Actual Control. In October 2024, India and China reached an agreement to disengage troops from various friction points in the Ladakh sector. This agreement was a significant move towards easing the military standoff that had persisted, showcasing both nations’ willingness to de-escalate and move towards more cordial relations.
