China has urged the Philippines to cease what it calls provocative actions in the South China Sea, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding its territorial sovereignty and maritime interests through its coast guard operations. This appeal comes in response to a recent supply mission by the Philippines to a grounded vessel at Ren’ai Jiao, known internationally as Second Thomas Shoal.
According to Chinese authorities, the Philippine vessel entered the contested area despite prior warnings from Beijing. In response, China’s coast guard monitored the situation closely and issued warnings to the Philippine ship during the mission. China has asserted that these measures were lawful and necessary to uphold its territorial claims.
The Chinese government has accused the Philippines of breaching commitments made under the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea. Beijing argues that such actions by the Philippines could potentially destabilize regional peace and stability.
China has reiterated its intention to continue law-enforcement operations in the area around Ren’ai Jiao and other locations it refers to as the Nansha Qundao, known internationally as the Spratly Islands. This stance underscores China’s determination to protect what it considers its maritime rights in the region.
